Safe Sex

Safe sex is defined as "Sexual activity engaged in by people who have taken precautions to protect themselves against sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS." This is also referred to as safer sex, or protected sex, while unsafe sex or unprotected sex is sexual activity engaged in by people who have not taken precautions to protect themselves against sexually transmitted infections. Some sources suggest the use of safer sex is preferable to safe sex, as this reflects that risk is reduced, not avoided.

Safe sex practices became more prominent in the late 1980s as a result of the AIDS epidemic. Promoting safe sex is now a principal aim of sex education. From the viewpoint of society, safe sex can be regarded as a harm reduction strategy aimed at reducing risks.

The risk reduction of safe sex is not absolute; for example the reduced risk to the receptive partner of acquiring HIV from HIV seropositive partners not wearing condoms to compared to when they wear them is estimated to be about a four- to fivefold.

Woman awakes to find stranger cuddling her in bed

BEIJING, Jan. 12 (Xinhuanet) -- A U.S. woman woke up in the morning as usual only to find a stranger cuddling her in bed. Washington D.C. Police said the incident happened early Sunday morning in the victim's residence in Glover Park, according to media reports Tuesday. "I woke up at about 6:15 a.m. with a stranger in my bed," the victim said. "He was not there when I went to sleep last night." Police said they don't know how the intruder got into the house. Nothing was missing in the house and the victim said she was not harmed. Police are looking into the possibility that the incident is related to other "cuddling" incidents in the area. In late August, a female Georgetown University student woke up and found a person touching her inappropriately while she was in bed. Two days earlier a man entered a student's home through an unlocked front door and lay down on a couch with the victim, who was startled awake and told the man to leave. Other similar cases were reported and students call him the "Cuddler" because he will climb into a bed or couch where a resident is sleeping.
